13th February 2022
Sermon
is delivered on zoom by our minister, Revd. Chee Keong Yong
When we read Scripture whether out of daily practice or the odd chance when we pick up the Bible, most frequently the question that confronts us is “What is the relevance of the text to my life and situation?” As we consider the texts from the Gospel and epistle reading today, the same question applies. What is the relevance of the Beatitudes and the claim that the Resurrection matters?
Take, for example, the text from the Gospel today – the Beatitudes. Are these sayings of Jesus to be descriptive or prescriptive? Descriptive in that they are to affirm those who are of the lowly station in life now will be exalted in the Kingdom of God. The prescriptive position maintains that Jesus is saying that all his followers should be poor, sacrificing to the point of hunger, and weeping over the mournful events occurring in one’s community and around the world.
For whichever position we take, what is the text saying to us in the light of our situation and times? We have all been affected by the pandemic for the past couple of years. The descriptive position exhorts us to accept the current predicament as life-giving. While the prescriptive view invites all to submit to the inevitable occurrence. I reckon that both positions are difficult for one who seeks the relevancy of Scripture.
Are we to read Scripture with this “fait accompli” mindset? Surely, there needs to be a better way to understand Scripture in the light of our daily living? How does the church offer hope to a world crying out for answers to its predicament?
Come join us this Sunday on Zoom at 10.00 am. (Bangkok time)
Blessings
Chee
