Sermon

is delivered in-person & on zoom by our minister,
Revd. Chee Keong Yong
Revd. Chee introduces his sermon theme this week:

Theme: “Are we looking backwards?

Scripture Readings for this week:
Old Testament:   Psalm 16*1 Kings 19:15-16, 19-21*
New Testament: Galatians 5:1-25*

Gospel of Christ: Luke 9:51-62*
(*click for online Bible)

Pastor Chee introduces this week’s theme:
Elisha in the OT text informed Elijah that he wanted to bid his parents farewell – “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye and then I will come with you.”

Similarly, we find a wannabe follower of Jesus said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”

One would have thought that the request to say “goodbye” to one’s family before embarking on a mission would seem reasonable. However, both the requests invited a rebuke instead. In both instances, Elisha and the man were plowing.

Plowing a field is no small task to those who are familiar with it. It demands diligence and staying focused – straight ahead. As Jesus indicated, turning one’s head backwards is a huge no, no.

Paul in his epistle to the Galatians suggested a similar line – keep standing firm and not look back.

The question for us is, “Are we looking backwards?” This will not do as Elijah, Paul and Jesus admonish the would be follower(s). No doubt, when the going gets tough, one is tempted to look backwards. And many have failed as scripture warns us. The consequence of looking back to better days has dire results. The best days are ahead, no matter how dark the journey may take us. Stay on course.

Again, may I encourage all in Bangkok to return back to in-person services at 10.00 am. Services on Zoom will be phased out for most people. People who are overseas and those who are incapacitated locally will be given a new zoom link in due course.

Blessings
Chee

THIS SUNDAY!
The Church Council are meeting. If you have any matters you wish to inform the council about or have any issues you wish to be brought to the meeting, please contact Cameron Macky, Council Chair, as soon as possible: cameronmacky91@gmail.com
In-person Evening service continues on Sundays. Worship starts at 6.30pm.
at BCGH (Bangkok Christian Guesthouse)
Please scroll down below for details

Please pray
a) for those who have contracted Covid19, including those in our own congregation and their families.
b) for the refugee families and other displaced persons residing in Bangkok, for their safety and well-being as well as positive progress in securing permanent resettlement solutions to their plight.
c) for the people of Ukraine both in the country and refugees as well as those caught up in wars and conflicts in many other countries, including in neighbouring Myanmar.
d) for the people in Yemen, Afghanistan, Mozambique and the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia and Somalia) who needlessly lack both food and medical supplies and are close to starvation. We pray that the recently agreed truce in fighting in both The Yemen and Ethiopia will transform into  permanent endings of hostilities in those countries.
ICB – Caring for Displaced People through partnership Life Raft International

An updated document relating to the above has now been uploaded to the Policies section of our website. The ICB Council has been working with Life Raft International for many years in seeking to relocate people to various countries for resettlement. The uploaded document gives clear parameters of our relationship with Life Raft International.

Please remember the COVID Code:
All are advised to follow social distancing to keep others safe. A temperature check is required. We have members who have been infected lately and we do not wish others to be infected. If you are not feeling well, please stay at home and join us on Zoom. For safety precautions, the ICB Council has advised against any form of fellowship events for the time being. Bottled water will be available.

If you plan to come in your own car:
It is best to enter Phayathai Road from the Patumwan intersection (at Discovery Center/MBK) and drive across Hua Chang (elephant head) Bridge, taking the left-most lane. Then, immediately over the bridge, turn left into the SCC/CCT compound just before Evergreen Place and Asia Hotel.
There are limited parking spaces (free) just inside the compound but if full, you can park in the CCT Tower Building at the back of this same compound (there maybe a small charge p/hr)

Below is a map of how to get to BCGH from BTS and MRT stations. Just a 5-8 min walk.
Safe short-cut hint: from BTS concourse floor, enter Central Silom Complex and exit at the back of the store on the ground floor into Soi Saladaeng 2. Turn right and walk for 2 minutes. BCGH is on the left (before Convent Rd). (From MRT, take lift from the concourse up to skywalk level and walk to BTS station then turn left into Central Silom Complex using the same directions as from BTS.)
Fellowship is essential for the wellbeing of any true community – but it’s not so easy when we cannot all meet personally face-to-face, and have no social events.
At ICB, we wish to develop new ways to extend Christian fellowship among all of us during 2022. We invite you to help with your ideas for such fellowship activities.
