6th February 2022
Sermon
is delivered on zoom by our minister, Revd. Chee Keong Yong
Revd. Chee’s sermon theme is entitled: Swept off the Feet
Our Scripture Readings are: Epistle: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11*
Gospel: Luke 5:1-11*(*click for online Bible)
Pastor Chee’s brief :
Most of us will be rather familiar with this story from Luke’s Gospel. Generally, it is a “call” story about the call of Peter. We gather this from Matthew’s and Mark’s versions of the story where the phrase “Follow me” is used.
Churches tend to use similar words as they seek new ministers. A call is issued to the nominated candidate.
Yet, a careful reading of Luke’s version gave little indication of this. In fact, Luke does not even use the phrase, “Follow me”. As such, we may well ask the question, “why not?” Most of us are sticklers to the normative. We tend not to like any deviations for it puts some of us out of joint, so to say. We may well cry, “Come on, Luke, stick to what is common.”
There are good reasons why he wrote this event the way he did. Remember, I spoke of this before, that we need to grasp the context before we can understand the text. Luke was writing or giving an account (his Gospel and the book of Acts) to a person by the name of Theophilus (a Greek). He was not writing to a fellow Jew but someone outside the Jewish faith and thought. When you write a letter, you will need to be careful as to whom you are writing.
Theophilus is not about to “follow” Jesus. You cannot convince a learned person like Theophilus to follow Jesus, like Peter and the other disciples.
For Theophilus to respond to Luke’s story and be convinced about Jesus, something more is needed.
Join us this Sunday, to unravel Luke’s thoughts in this story from Luke 5:1-11. We are on Zoom at 10.00 am.
Blessings
Chee
