Sunday, 7th August 2022Sermon
is delivered in-person & on zoom by our minister, Revd. Chee Keong Yong
Revd. Chee introduces his sermon theme this week:
Theme:“Put your hands in the hands (of the Man from Galilee)“
This week, I would like us to focus on both the Epistle and Gospel reading. Both readings have a bearing on our lives today.
The events that are unfolding around us in our world today seem scary enough. Last Sunday, we are reminded through Jesus’ parable that it is not God’s intention to scare us even with a statement like – “You fool, this night your life will be demanded from you.” Rather, the intention is to make us realize that our security is not in our own hands.
Jesus reaffirms this intention in the text from the Gospel today. It is a continuation of the Gospel last Sunday. It is the Father’s pleasure to take care of us all.
Some of us may remember the song – “Put your hands in the hands (of the Man from Galilee)”. It is a rather catchy song. I remember the song way back when I was in Youth Fellowship. I want to relate a testimony given by Henri Nouwen that relates to this song.
“The late great spiritual writer Henri Nouwen received the greatest revelation about faith at, of all places, the circus! Nouwen went to see the German trapeze group ‘The Flying Rodleighs’ perform. He was mesmerized by their breathtaking performance as they flew gracefully through the air. At the end of the show, he spoke with the leader of the troupe, Rodleigh himself. Nouwen asked him how he was able to perform with such grace and ease so high in the air. Rodleigh responded, ‘The public might think that I am the great star of the trapeze, but the real star is Joe, my catcher…The secret is that the flyer does nothing and the catcher does everything. When I fly to Joe, I have simply to stretch out my arms and hands and wait for him to catch me. The worst thing the flyer can do is try to catch the catcher. I’m not supposed to catch Joe. It’s Joe’s task to catch me.'” (Henri J.M. Nouwen, The Only Necessary Thing: Living a Prayerful Life (New York: The Crossroad Publishing Company, 1999), pp.195-196).
Would you put your hands in the hands of the One who truly matters – just like Abraham and Sarah did?
Join us this Sunday for worship at 10.00 am.
Blessings,
Chee

ICB Evening Service at
Bangkok Christian Guesthouse (BCGH)
has been suspended until further notice.
Fellowship is essential for the wellbeing of any true community – but it’s not so easy when we cannot all meet personally face-to-face, and have no social events.
At ICB, we wish to develop new ways to extend Christian fellowship among all of us during 2022. We invite you to help with your ideas for such fellowship activities.
