Our Gospel text continues on to chapter 17 where we see Jesus encountering a group of lepers. In some parts of the world where leprosy is still rife, lepers are social outcasts and are mostly confined to specific quarantine to make life as best as possible. Much misery abounds due to social stigma. Medical science has long found a cure for this disease that is caused by bacteria. The younger generation may never have come across a leper. It is a disease that causes the loss of limbs and facial features like the nose and ears.
All ten lepers beg Jesus to have mercy on them. They were told to show themselves who can certify their cleansing. On their way, all discovered that they had healed. It may be that nine of them were Jews. However, one was a Samaritan who perhaps may not be obligated to get a certificate from a Jewish priest. So he returned to Jesus to give thanks.
From here, we deduce the implications of the healing – nine returned to their former life in the community. Only one found new life in Christ Jesus.
Jesus was puzzled as to why only the Samaritan recognized that the physical healing was not skin deep.
Remember that Luke was telling this event to Theophilus who was a seeker and a non Jew. So it is imperative for Theophilus to know that God’s blessings are not only confined to the Jews. It is available to others.
Join us this Sunday to give thanks to God for our healing at 10.00 am.

ICB – Caring for Displaced People through partnership Life Raft International
An updated document relating to the above has now been uploaded to the Policies section of our website. The ICB Council has been working with Life Raft International for many years in seeking to relocate people to various countries for resettlement. The uploaded document gives clear parameters of our relationship with Life Raft International.
Fellowship is essential for the wellbeing of any true community – but it’s not so easy when we cannot all meet personally face-to-face, and have no social events.
At ICB, we wish to develop new ways to extend Christian fellowship among all of us during 2022. We invite you to help with your ideas for such fellowship activities.
