is delivered live on Zoom by our minister, Revd. Chee Keong Yong
Revd. Chee’s sermon is entitled: “Setting Our Hope”
Our Scripture Readings: Epistle: Ephesians 4:1-16*
and Gospel: John 6: 24-35*(*click to open the Bible pages)
Pastor Chee outlines his theme:Our scriptures this Sunday are again a continuation from last week’s readings. Hence our interpretation may have a similar reflection. However, it is my intent to take us deeper into the words of John, in particular.
We have been following the event of the feeding of the 5,000 – many of us will be familiar with the story. It is also an exhortation to follow in the footsteps of the disciples that we engage with Jesus’ mission in feeding the masses. So far so good.
This is where perhaps we need to go beyond the literal and consider our tasks at hand. Feeding the masses is one thing but to be confronted with an ungrateful lot is quite another. Too often we expect those who are recipients of grace to be grateful and docile and just be silent. We may even have an air of superiority, assuming a patronizing position.
John’s Jesus does not allow for this. He begs us to move from that position to look beyond and behold that which is far more deeply satisfying and enriching.
Feeding people on the physical level can never be truly satisfying. The Israelites’ experience in the wilderness is a prime example. Feeding the masses today and tending to the demands of our society will never ever be enough.
Paul urges his hearers from the Ephesian Church to consider their privileged position that is found in Jesus. While we are given different roles to play in God’s kingdom, we need to keep on setting our HOPE in Christ, for nothing else can satisfy.
Blessings
Chee
Online Notes about ICB worship on Zoom:
Please come on time and allow a minute or two to connect.
You will be “muted” upon entering the zoom room with the musical prelude on. Please stay muted during the service.
Pastor Chee suggests, “while you listen to the prelude, please pray for the service to run smoothly for God’s glory. There’s plenty of time to chit chat in the break out rooms after the service.”
